As few as one diet soda daily may increase the risk for leukemia in men and women, and for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in men, according to new results from the longest-ever running study on aspartame as a carcinogen in humans. Importantly, this is the most comprehensive, long-term study ever completed on this topic, so it holds more weight than other past studies which appeared to show no risk. And disturbingly, it may also open the door for further similar findings on other cancers in future studies.


The most thorough study yet on aspartame was recently conducted, where researchers prospectively analyzed data from a total of 77,218 women and 47,810 men in the analysis, for a total of 2,278,396 person-years of data. The combined results of this new study showed that just one 12-fl oz. can (355 ml) of diet soda daily leads to:

- 42 percent higher leukemia risk in men and women (pooled analysis)
- 102 percent higher multiple myeloma risk (in men only)
- 31 percent higher non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk (in men only)


These results were based on multi-variable relative risk models, all in comparison to participants who drank no diet soda. Diet soda is the largest dietary source of aspartame (by far) in the U.S. Every year, Americans consume about 5,250 tons of aspartame in total, of which about 86 percent (4,500 tons) is found in diet sodas.








From fast food chains to the best restaurants, aspartame is right there next to salt and pepper, as if it merits being a part of daily life. Children are continuously bombarded with subliminal exposure to foods and treats containing artificial sweeteners whether on TV ads or Kid’s shows. Yet, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years, affecting both immediate and long-term health. Individuals who consume non-nutritive sweeteners crave sugar more than those who don't use these sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners increase desire for very sweet flavors. Among the worst offenders and the most commonly used sugar substitutes are Aspartame and Sucralose.

Marketed as a "sugar substitute," aspartame is put in a large number of food products. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious and include seizures and death. Aspartame is in fact synthetic excretion. The most cost effective method for manufacturing aspartame is to have genetically modified E.coli bacteria produce large amounts of phenylalanine – in essence, bacteria excretion – and combine it with amino acid. This process was revealed in 1999 when the Independent newspaper in Britain investigated Monsanto after G8 leaders launched an inquiry into the safety of genetically modified food.


The thought of using GMO bacteria excrement as a sweetener may be distasteful, but it pales in comparison to the downright deadly health effects of the product. When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86° F, the wood alcohol in Aspartame converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. The multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, where methanol toxicity is.

Consuming Aspartame at the time of conception can cause birth defects. The phenylalanine concentrates in the placenta, causing mental retardation, according to Dr. Louis Elsas, Pediatrics Professor, Genetics, at Emory University, in his testimony before Congress. In the original lab tests, animals developed brain tumors (phenylalanine breaks down into DXP, a brain tumor agent). Neurosurgeons have said when they remove brain tumors; they have found high levels of Aspartame in them.


Artificial sweeteners especially aspartame has gotten a bad rap over the years, most likely due to studies showing they cause cancer. But not to worry Ajinomoto the company that makes Aspartame has changed the name to AminoSweet. It has the same toxic ingredients but a nice new sounding name. And if you or your child happens to be allergic to Aspartame, well don’t take it personally it’s just business.


Despite the evidence gained over the years showing that aspartame is a dangerous toxin, it has remained on the global market. It continues to gain approval for use in new types of food despite evidence showing that it causes neurological brain damage, cancerous tumors, and endocrine disruption, among other things.


The details of aspartame’s history are lengthy, but the point remains that the carcinogen was illegitimately approved as a food additive through heavy-handed prodding by a powerful corporation with its own interests in mind. Practically all drugs and food additives are approved by the FDA not because science shows they are safe but because companies essentially lobby the FDA with monetary payoffs and complete the agency’s multi-million dollar approval process.

Changing aspartame’s name to something that is “appealing and memorable,” in Ajinomoto’s own words, may hoodwink some but hopefully most will reject this clever marketing tactic as nothing more than a desperate attempt to preserve the company’s multi-billion dollar cash cow. Do not be deceived.





The aspartame horror began in 1981 due to Former Secretary of Defense, and architect of torture, Donald Rumsfeld, as head of the G.D. Searle pharmaceutical company, when he used his political clout to put a known carcinogen on the market to poison a nation all in the name of money. Donald Rumsfeld is responsible for contributing to the approval of Aspartame. Think about how much better our health could be had Mr. Rumsfeld not pushed Aspartame into the market for human consumption. Furthermore, Rumsfeld is highly responsible for the destruction of Iraq, the death of one million Iraqi’s, and thousands of US soldiers. Based on the false claim that Saddam Hussein had WMD’s, they took the initiative and bombed Iraq. Extensive evidence proves that 9/11 was absolutely an inside job. As a newly released Senate Armed Services Committee report makes clear, the effects of Rumsfeld's cavalier attitude toward "detainee abuse" -- and what international law would probably call torture -- didn't just stop at the military prison on Cuba. "Rumsfeld's authorization of aggressive interrogation techniques for use at Guantánamo Bay was a direct cause of detainee abuse there," the report says. The wars have resulted in the death of millions of innocent men, women, and children. Their God given right of living, loving, and enjoying this life has been stripped by criminals like Rumsfeld. Billions of people have fallen victim to the poisonous chemical Aspartame, and their lives will never be the same. These are crimes on humanity, and not on an individual race, religion, creed, nation, or people. A crime on humanity is a crime on us all.


In 1985 Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle, the chemical company that held the patent to aspartame, the active ingredient in NutraSweet. Monsanto was apparently untroubled by aspartame's clouded past, including a 1980 FDA Board of Inquiry, comprised of three independent scientists, which confirmed that it "might induce brain tumors." The FDA had actually banned aspartame based on this finding, only to have Searle Chairman Donald Rumsfeld (currently the Secretary of Defense) vow to "call in his markers," to get it approved. On January 21, 1981, the day after Ronald Reagan's inauguration, Searle re-applied to the FDA for approval to use aspartame in food sweetener, and Reagan's new FDA commissioner, Arthur Hayes Hull, Jr., appointed a 5-person Scientific Commission to review the board of inquiry's decision.


It soon became clear that the panel would uphold the ban by a 3-2 decision, but Hull then installed a sixth member on the commission, and the vote became deadlocked. He then personally broke the tie in aspartame's favor. Hull later left the FDA under allegations of impropriety, served briefly as Provost at New York Medical College, and then took a position with Burston-Marsteller, the chief public relations firm for both Monsanto and GD Searle. Since that time he has never spoken publicly about aspartame.


Stevia, a sweet herb, not an additive, which helps in the metabolism of sugar, and would be ideal for diabetics, has now been approved as a dietary supplement by the F.D.A. For years, the F.D.A. has outlawed this sweet herb because of their loyalty to Monsanto. Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote a bill that would have warned all infants, pregnant mothers and children of the dangers of Aspartame. The bill would have also instituted independent studies on the problems existing in the population (seizures, changes in brain chemistry, changes in neurological and behavioral symptoms). It was killed by the powerful drug and chemical lobbies, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting public. On February 21, 1984, the Associated Press released the news FDA Rejects Hearing on Aspartame.


More than one reputable investigator has questioned the possible side effects of aspartame. In laboratory animals, aspartame has shown some relation to alterations of brain neurotransmitters. The Food and Sciences Department at Arizona State University has questioned the safety of aspartame after finding that ASPARTAME BREAKS DOWN INTO METHANOL (wood alcohol-CH3OH) at 86° F and it would react the same, chemically, at a temperature 12 points higher (body temperature). Dr. Richard Wurtman of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in a letter to Lancet 846;1060, November 9, 1985, provides subjective reports on the correlation between high aspartame ingestion and altered neurological behavior, including headaches, hallucinations and, ultimately, grand mal seizures. In three instances, the symptoms disappeared upon the elimination of aspartame from the diet.


From the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Vol. 14, pp, 565-577, J.A. Goldman, R,/H. Lerman, J.H. Contois and J.N. Udall, Jr., investigated the effect of sucrose consumption on the behavior of preschool children. Children were tested individually using a double blind, crossover design. On separate mornings each child received 6 oz. of juice, sweetened on one morning with sucrose and on the other with an artificial sweetener. Children were observed for 90 minutes following the drinks, alternating between 15-minute sessions of work on structured tasks and sessions of free play. Following the sucrose drink, the children showed a decrement in performance in the structured testing situation, and they demonstrated more "inappropriate" behavior during free play. These differences in behavior were most pronounced approximately 45 to 60 minutes after the drinks.


We are beginning to see documentation of the food/behavior link schoolteachers observe on a daily basis, despite what the sugar industry would have us believe. In Neurology, the "bible" of the neurologists, it was reported there are significantly more headaches in people who took aspartame. In another report from the FDA in 1991, they had complaints of seizures, panic attacks, and mania. Can you imagine the waste and possible harm done to these 5,000 patients receiving inappropriate testing, psychotherapy, and drugs for their nonexistent psychiatric problem?


Other problems uncovered by Dr. H.J. Roberts, an authority on aspartame, are hyperactivity, confusion, dizziness, visual problems, tremors, and insomnia. Roberts cites a study from Biological Psychiatry in which depressed patients were given aspartame. The results were such a wild confusion of neurological and wacko responses that the study was quickly abandoned. One of the amusing but sad findings on aspartame is that it makes you fat. Millions of people take NutaSweet or Equal to avoid sugar and thus avoid gaining weight. Animal experiments revealed years ago that aspartame increases the appetite of the animals for sugar and carbohydrates.


Dr Richard Wurtman, a neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, confirmed this in humans. Then the American Cancer Society, an improbable ally against a big corporation, tracked the eating habits of 80,000 women and confirmed Wurtman's findings. If you are taking NutraSweet or Equal, you may experience any of the above-mentioned effects or one or more of the following complaints:

There are undoubtedly other unreported symptoms, but the FDA continues to look the other way. In fact, the National Institutes of Health published a report listing 16 reasons why you should not take aspartame. This drug was once listed by the Pentagon as a possible biochemical warfare weapon. But they must have decided it would be more profitable to poison our citizens with it than to wait for a war. Dr. Roberts concludes: "More than half the population now consumes enormous amounts of a chemical that I regard as an imminent public health hazard." Twelve hundred food products now contain aspartame. It's difficult to avoid it unless you stick to fresh food. Remember, restaurants use aspartame, especially in desserts. Many of the test animals in the original Searle animal experiments developed brain tumors. This information was suppressed. The tumors were removed surgically and the animals were kept in the experiment. The FDA claims it knew nothing about this shocking finding.


How long do you think melatonin would stay on the market if it caused brain tumors? How can this be? The answer is always the same: Follow the money. Consumers will soon have another artificial sweetener to watch out for. The Food and Drug Administration has recently announced approval of a new sweetener that will be used in dry food products and sold to consumers in tablet form. The new sweetener, acesulfame potassium or "acesulfame K" for short, will compete with aspartame and saccharin in the billion-dollar-a-year artificial sweetener market in the U.S.


The Hoechst Celanese Corporation of Somerville, N.J., a subsidiary of HOECHST A.G., of Frankfurt, West Germany, will market it under the brand name Sunette. According to Hoechst, Sunette will have the same sweetening power as aspartame, which is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. But it will be more versatile in that unlike aspartame it doesn't lose potency after long storage or after heating. It will be used in such things as chewing gum, instant tea and coffee, gelatins and non-dairy creamers.


Hoechst is also trying to get approval for Sunette's use in baked goods, candies and liquid foods and drinks. It is already being used in soft drinks in West Germany. The FDA says acesulfame K is safe and that four long-term animal studies have not shown any toxic effects. But the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington, D.C.-based consumer group, warned that the studies they have seen showed that animals fed acesulfame suffered more tumors than those not fed the other sweetener. The FDA responded by saying that the incidence of tumors was typical of what could routinely be expected and was not due to the sweetener. With the safety of aspartame and saccharine still in question by medical researchers, consumers should take the claims for Sunette with a grain of salt!



Proteins are the most difficult foods to properly digest and require a considerable amount of energy for digestion. Therefore, protein snacks are inadvisable since they require hard digestive labor from the body and thus deplete its digestive powers. Fruit, vegetables and carbohydrates make better snacks. Since proteins take a long time to digest, it is likely that a snack protein will be overtaken by the next meal. If a person has a proper protein breakfast, then ideally lunch should come four-and-a-half hours later without any snacks in between.


The body uses energy for other processes besides digesting food. Items such as celery, carrot sticks and popcorn (air popped) are preferable. Fruit also makes a good afternoon snack item. Some use frozen organic red grapes as a Popsicle-type snack in the summer. Unfortunately, most people want to snack on sweets, candy, desserts and other high-stress items. One advantage of the protein-and-vegetable breakfast is that the detrimental effect of sweet snacks eaten in the afternoon is minimized due to the strong metabolic pattern established by the breakfast.


The best advice is to avoid snacks altogether, or to use snack time to boost nutrition with a glass of organic carrot/vegetable juice. But if you do choose to snack, use fruits, vegetables and carbohydrates. If you succumb to the cookie urge, late afternoon is the least detrimental time. But have a glass of vegetable juice with it. No deprivation, just hedging your bet. Adding a couple of raw vegetables, or vegetable juice, ot a sweet snack will help prevent activation of the immune system against the high-stress snack, and it will help conserve energy by adding enzymes. Just add a carrot and a celery stick to your cookie snack and you will fare much better.


Keep in mind that a strong craving for sweets is a classic symptom of protein deficiency at the cellular level. A well-nourished system does not keep the "appestat button" (hypothalamus and pituitary) pushed, calling for more nutrients. Blood sugar becomes stable, and stamina and steadfast energy become new characteristics. Stabilization of the blood sugar takes effect usually within three weeks to three months after beginning a proper eating regimen.

The components of aspartame can lead to a number of health problems. Side effects can occur gradually, can be immediate, or can be acute reactions. According to Lendon Smith, M.D., Russell Blaylock, M.D. and a growing number of other medical doctors, there is an enormous population suffering from side effects associated with aspartame, yet have no idea why drugs, supplements and herbs don't relieve their symptoms. Even though some don't 'appear' to suffer immediate reactions, these individuals are still susceptible to the long-term damage caused by excitatory amino acids, phenylalanine, methanol, and DKP.

These are not allergies or sensitivities, but diseases and disease syndromes. Aspartame poisoning is commonly misdiagnosed because aspartame symptoms mock textbook 'disease' symptoms, such as Grave's Disease.


Aspartame changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, blocking or lowering the levels of serotonin, tyrosine, dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline. Therefore, it is typical that aspartame symptoms cannot be detected in lab tests and on x-rays. Textbook disorders and diseases may actually be a toxic load as a result of aspartame poisoning.


So many ask what do I do to get the aspartame out of my body, how do I get rid of the symptoms and problems triggered by aspartame?


The most important starting point of any detoxification program is to stop exposure to the toxin or toxins. This means avoiding even small amounts, since once sensitized to the toxin even minute amounts can produce full-blown toxicity. This is especially so with accumulative toxins, such as aspartame.


It has been shown conclusively that the metabolic products of methanol breakdown, formaldehyde in particular, accumulates on the DNA and cellular proteins. Once you have cleansed your diet of the toxin, removal of the toxin and its metabolic products from your system will begin. Central to this process is the body's detoxification system, which exist in all cells of the body, with the bulk of detoxification taking place in the liver.


The liver's detoxification system is divided into two components called phase I and phase II, which work in tandem.


Toxins pass through phase I and then pass to phase II where they are further detoxified and made water soluble for eventual disposal. It is now known that you can significantly enhance the body's ability to detoxify these substances through the judicious use of specific supplements.


Of the two systems phase II is most important and most often impaired. The following is a list of nutrients that enhance detoxification:

* Indole-3 carbinol-100 mg twice a day. This natural substance enhances phase II liver detox. It is extracted from cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. It can be purchased as an extract.

* Taurine 500 mg a day- This is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is used by the liver for sulfonation reactions. It is to be taken between meals.

* Milk Thistle (silymarin) 175 mg. Take two twice a day. This extract has been shown to substantially enhance liver detoxification and is also a very powerful antioxidant for all cells.

* Curcumin- 500 mg three times a day with olive oil. This is an extract taken from the spice turmeric. It is an extremely powerful antioxidant,enhances both phase I and II detoxification, is a radioprotectant, enhances bile flow,inhibits cancer growth, and is a very powerful anti-inflammatory. Also enhances DNA repair enzymes.

* Panthethine 250 mg Take one capsule 3X a day- This vitamin is the co-enzyme form of pantothenic acid. It plays a vital role in enhancing the aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme. (for formaldehyde detoxification)

* Thiamine- 100 mg. Take three a day. (vitamin B1) This vitamin plays a major role in protecting nerves as well as the brain. It is commonly depleted with pesticide exposure.

* Pyrodoxyl-5 phosphate 50 mg- Take one a day. This is the functional form of vitamin B6. People exposed to chemical toxins frequently have low levels of this vitamin.


When vitamin B6 is deficient, taurine is also low. It plays a major role in protecting against glutamate and aspartate toxicity.


In addition to detoxification, other nutrients play a more direct role in protecting cells and in promoting their recovery from toxicity.

These include:

* Magnesium- 750 to 1000 mg a day. (magnesium citrate/malate) Magnesium plays a major role in cell protection, especially against excitotoxicty. In addition it protects against strokes and heart attacks.

* Selenium- 200 ug a day. This mineral also plays a role in protecting cells from toxins, especially mercury. It is necessary for thyroid hormone metabolism. It plays a major role in protecting against free radicals.

* N-acetyl L-cysteine (NAC)- 750 mg a day. This is a substance that in cells is converted to glutathione. Glutathione is your cells' major protection against free radicals produced by toxins such as aspartame. In addition, NAC removes mercury. NAC also enhances detoxicifation.

* Multi-B vitamins- This should be food-based multivitamins that contains all of the B vitamins. Take one a day, or more if stressed.

* Vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols) 400 IU twice a day. A powerful antioxidant, prevents heart attacks an stokes and the gamma-tocopherol is a powerful anti-inflammatory.

* Vitamin C (as magnesium ascorbate) 2000 mg twice to three times a day. Plays a major role in cell protection against oxygen stress, protects the nervous system and enhances tissue repair.

* CoQ10 100 mg twice a day. This is a major energy molecule and protects the brain against excitotoxicity. Necessary for heart muscle function. Depleted by statin drugs.

* DHA 200 mg a day. This is a component of omega-3-fatty acids. It plays a vital role in membrane repair and repair of synapses.

In addition to avoiding aspartame you must avoid other toxins as well.

This includes MSG, pesticides, herbicides, bug sprays, fluoride, mercury, cadmium, aluminum and the many other toxins found commonly in the environment.

Many of these toxins act synergistically, that is, when combined they have toxic effects thats greater than the sum of their effects.

In addition, you need regular, moderate exercise (rebound exercise is best), avoid cheese, and refined vegetable oils. Do not smoke or use drugs.

All of these things increase free radical damage and prevent tissue repair.

You should eat a diet high in vegetables and with some fruits, no sugar (or honey), moderate complex carbohydrates and pure water free of contaminants, including fluoride. Do not use fluoride tooth paste, mouthwashes or receive fluoride treatments.

If you follow these principles you will notice quick recovery from your toxic encounter. More serious toxic encounters may take several months for recovery.




Neotame: 13,000 Times Sweeter Than Sugar And More Toxic Than Aspartame

In the event that the public becomes too informed and savvy about toxic additives in our food supply, what’s a multi-billion dollar industry to do? The first step is to create another more toxic version of the additive. The second step is to collude with regulatory authorities such as the FDA to convince the public that the new, more toxic additive is safe. The third and final step is to prevent the toxic additive from being listed on any ingredient labels. From the folks that brought us Aspartame, meet Neotame, a deadly sweetener that you’ll never see on a label because…well that’s just the way the FDA wants it.


Neotame is officially marketed as an inexpensive artificial sweetener made by NutraSweet, which is a former division of Monsanto and original manufacturer of aspartame.


Eighty percent of all Food and Drug Administration (FDA) complaints pertain to aspartame’s adverse reactions. These reports include: grand mal seizures, brain tumors, blindness and other health-related problems, including deaths. Monsanto’s Nick Rosa stated in 1998, that Neotame is “based on the aspartame formula.”


It is up to 13,000 times sweeter than sucrose (table sugar). The product is very attractive to food manufacturers, as its use greatly lowers the cost of production compared to using sugar or high fructose corn syrup (due to the lower quantities needed to achieve the same sweetening).


Neotame is aspartame plus 3-di-methylbutyl, which can be found on the EPA’s list of most hazardous chemicals. The aspartame formula is comprised of Phenylalanine [50%], which caused seizures in lab animals and Aspartic Acid [40%], which caused “holes in the brains” of lab animals — bonded by Methyl Alcohol, or Methanol [10%] which is capable of causing blindness, liver damage and death.


Methanol, or wood alcohol in aspartame breaks down further in heat and in the body, into Formaldehyde (embalming fluid), Formic Acid (venom in ant stings) and the most deadly of all — Diketopiperazine (DKP), a brain tumor agent.


When it comes to human health, neotame is in the same dangerous category as aspartame, but it is a deadlier neurotoxin, immunotoxin and excitotoxin. The long-term effects are essentially cell-death.


Even Monsanto’s own pre-approval studies of neotame revealed adverse reactions. Unfortunately, Monsanto only conducted a few one-day studies in humans rather than encouraging independent researchers to obtain NIH funding to conduct long-term human studies on the effects of neotame.


There were NO independent studies that found neotame to be safe. All industry-funded studies are now being found to be based on very poorly designed, deceptive and fraudulent research .


This is no surprise given all of the problems with aspartame industry research and scientific abuse. It is clear that any neotame research that Monsanto, industry groups, or consultants of Monsanto should be rejected until which time more trustworthy, independent research can be conducted. Such experiments should include independent animals studies and especially long-term (e.g., 4-5 years+) human studies in various susceptible population groups.


Approval and Labeling

Neotame was approved by the FDA for general use in July 2002, and has now been approved by the EU. It is also is approved for use in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.


The FDA loosened all labeling requirements for Neotame as part of a large-scale effort to make it a near-ubiquitous artificial sweetener, to be found on the tabletop, in all prepared foods, even in organics. It simply does not have to be included in the ingredient list. How’s that for stealth?


If you purchase processed foods, whether USDA Certified Organic or not, that food may likely contain Neotame because it is cost-effective, and since no one knows it is there, there is no public backlash.


The USDA states that their National Organic Program (NOP) does not permit the use of neotame in products labeled certified organic, however this is likely a deceptive ploy to soothe the public’s concerns about this toxic sweetener.


Since the USDA is controlled by politicians and lobbyists, it cannot be trusted to protect any of its regulatory policies. The NOP is a division within the USDA in charge of regulating the USDA Certified Organic products, labeling, enforcement etc. Considering the size of this division in comparison to the amount of organic food they regulate, NOP standards are arguably as lax and useless as USDA’s conventional foods. The employees that enforce NOP standards know this very well.


Bottom Line: Don’t trust USDA organic foods and confide in local farms with reputable practices.


Where Do We Go From Here?

Due to corporate greed, it is becoming quite apparent that the entire food supply is becoming one toxic wasteland that none of us can rely on. We need to support local farms and move back to sustainble farming practices that benefit the population rather than harm it.


If you’re still consuming processed foods with artificial sweeteners, you are gambling with your long-term well being. There are no corporations that serve agribusiness that can be trusted to safeguard public health, and the regulatory agencies that are officially in charge of that mandate are in bed with them.
